Speed Runs

Speed running (trying to complete a videogame in the fastest time possible) is almost as old as gaming itself. At least, it's almost as old as games that have a definite end point or staging points, since speedrunning a game with infinitely repeating levels is Sisyphean.

This collection hosts downloadable movie files documenting the swiftest possible way to complete videogames such as Quake, Metroid, Zelda and many others. The videos come from Speed Demos Archive, TASvideos, and other sources.

Unless specifically noted as an 'emulated' run, all speed runs are done on the original game hardware, using only the normal save points available to a player.

This 11-minute timeattack of Super Mario Bros. 3 demonstrates secrets that players can use to advance through the game very quickly. Please note : These timeattack were played on an emulator, using game slow-down options and quicksaves. This time attack does not claim to be a contiguous performance, and is for entertainment purposes only. Super Metroid (PAL) - Any% TAS in 0:25 by Saturn, completed in July 5, 2010. This is a reworked any% TAS of Super Metroid, aiming for fastest completion time without restrictions. It uses a fully optimized route, which collects all the necessary items to maximize mobility, variety, and damage power of the beams for much quicker battles, while also using the latest speed tricks and boss strategies, with some of them never seen before. The result is a game completion of only 25 minutes, which is...

Legend of Zelda (ゼルダの伝説) is an adventure game that easily takes you days to beat. Its world is so huge and full of obscure secrets that without great deal of planning you won't make it in less than many hours. The previous Zelda movie which was designed together by many masterminds at the Nesvideos forums and played by Sleepz has now been beaten by Phil by 86 seconds because of tactical changes mostly. The Up+A trick (save and restart) was used in this movie several times. It was...

I made it mostly because I played this game as a child and it is a great memory for me ;) Hmm, the gameplay is comparably to Kung Fu, Balloon Fight or Popeye. Very old and easy and it goes on forever. However it just loops after stage 5 so I stopped my fmv there. Hmm, I don't know if you have played this game but as I said it's very simple. A well done run of River City Ransom, much of the enjoyment comes from seeing the author run as quickly as possible by all the minor gang members, only to reach and completely annihilate the bosses necessary to complete the game. Moral of the story? Beware people carrying trashcans. This movie was played at the "Novice" level.

Here it is, Kid Chameleon for the Genesis - probably the game with the most submissions of which none have been published. In retrospect, I can admit that it was fair to reject my previous submission - this one is more than a minute faster. I never expected it could be improved that much. This platformer is generally considered pretty hard. You die easily and often get lost and go in circles because of the ways the levels are set up. Some levels are just impossible (i.e Bloody Swamp, some of...

Super fast bouncing around. Completed without collecting any emeralds, with Sonic and Tails (controlled indirectly by mimicking Sonic's movements). Note: The AVI of this movie was encoded using the H264 codec, which allows for much superior quality/size ratio compared to divx/xvid. If you have codec problems, read the Codec Problems page for help.

In this game Link's must save Princes Zelda and the rest of Hyrule from Ganon once again. In his quest he collects many items such as, bow and arrows, hookshot, master sword, etc. He solves puzzles and defeats foes throughout 13 dungeons before meeting Ganon for the final time. Link does all this in 80 minutes! Making this moving was very interesting but very time consuming as well. This may have been too long of a game to tackle for a first time attack, but I am happy with the result. There...

This is the first timeattack movie with two players playing controlling two characters simultaneously. Quite interesting. The coordination is not perfect, but the movie is quite good nevertheless. Selected comments from the author: The first level might seem like "two average players playing", but that's because there's nothing to do for the other player. This game is a little similar to Bubble Bobble.

It wasn't long after I started that I realized this was going to be an hour+ time attack. As it is, I got it done in just over an hour. * Aims for the fastest possible time * Uses no warps (not that there are any) * Takes damage in two levels to save time * Plays on Normal difficulty * Lag reduction is turned off, but I'm not sure that matters as VBA seems to adjust settings...

This is a unique Squaresoft RPG that uses traditional Nintendo characters from the classic Super Mario Bros games. This movie includes the fight with Culex. Although the movie may have shorter without them, it is more interesting to be able to observe it and take advantage of the rewards later in the game. The Lucky Jewel is used in most of the boss fights to gain levels faster, most notably in the Culex fight. The Lucky Hammer was bought to use against the Shoguns to save the Lucky Jewel for...

For more details, see http://tasvideos.org/68M.html This timeattack is about Addams Family, but not the Fester's Quest one. This is really the seventh version, and the first published version. Note: This movie may not look cool, but the player is not to be blamed. The game is a little bad. You have to avoid objects by afar if you don't want to get hit, and you really have to collect $1M to complete the game. In my opinion Hans has done very good job perfecting this movie.

Chip 'n Dale 2 is quite an improvement over the simple Chip 'n Dale in terms of graphics and a whole lot of other things. Thankfully the solid controls haven't been tampered with. This new 2-player movie here is also a huge improvement over the previous movie. WalkerBoh manages to improve his own movie by over 3 minutes. Most of that time comes from clever death abuse. See the movie yourself to find out what that means.

This is the final version of my speedrun of Rockman, which I initially started making for a competition on Bisqwit's site (http://bisqwit.iki.fi/nesvideos/). Super Mario Bros 2 is one of our most competed games. This is Phil's contribution. It improves the previous record by Sleepz by 36 frames (about 0.5 seconds) with minor improvements here and there. All of the tricks are however the same ― tricks which were invented by various authors, such as Sleepz and Genisto. If you are wondering how some of the tricks in this video work, see the Super Mario Bros. 2 tricks page.

Some comments (aka. "novel" :P) from the author The movie is 301,102 frames (83:38 minutes) long, however the last minute was used to trigger a little easteregg. The last hit on Bowser takes place after 297,736 frames (82:42 minutes), so this is the actual time of completion. As the movie is so long, and even watching it in turbo mode still takes some time, I created a few savegames throughout the movie, which you can load if you watch the movie with "Open Read-Only"...

For more details, see http://tasvideos.org/170M.html An Adventure Island type game, i.e. very straightforward and uneventful, now 56 seconds faster due to an improvement by Walker Boh . The movie is well played, no question, but the game itself is just not that much fun to watch being played, even if it is played perfectly. It's actually quite nice if you play it at 150% or even 200% speed.

For more details, see http://tasvideos.org/196M.html This movie completes the PAL version of Rygar with only one item: the grappling hook. And what an awesome movie it is: It demonstrates as many glitches of the game as possible. Some of the glitches save time radically, some save a small amount time, and some don't save time at all but just look cool. It uses death as a shortcut, but this death warps Rygar forward by a couple of levels instead of backward. A somewhat similar trick can be done...

For more details, see http://tasvideos.org/605M.html Selected comments from the author: "This version is approximately 97 seconds faster than my last attempt (12:58 to 11:21). It without any major flaws, but there is a randomness factor involved with the 'big guys by the ladders.' Sometimes it is faster to quickly fight them instead of waiting for a chance to go over them, I think. The best scenario of course is that they do not block the way."
